Ian Mercer’s funeral

Along with several hundred other people I attended Ian Mercer’s funeral yesterday at St Andrew’s Church in Moretonhampstead. The moor town church was full to the brim with Commoners, conservationists, current and retired National Park Officers, people from Wales, academics, representatives of the Duchy of Cornwall and of course residents and friends from Moretonhampstead – testament to Ian Mercer’s inclusive and consolidating approach to life.

In respect the flag flies at half mast.

The order of service – the tributes to Ian were led by Bill Hardiman, the Moretonhampstead historian and Adrian Phillips, former head of the Countryside Commission

After the funeral everyone gathered in the Horse pub in Moretonhampstead and I had a pint of Dartmoor Ale’s ‘Legend’  – most appropriate.
