Snails enjoying the weather

During hot and dry weather in the summer snails shelter in the shade -they retreat into their shells, close their ‘door’ and wait. They will venture out at night when it is cooler and they is a dew.

Garden snail
As soon as a bit of rain arrives they will come out in broad daylight – this is a garden snail Helix aspersa

Banded snail
And this is the white-lipped banded snail Cepaea nemoralis

Both are very common species and often form the staple diet of song thrushes
