A couple of nights ago in my moth trap I caught a Cypress carpet. There are many species of carpets and they can be notoriously difficult to identify. This one however is quite easy on account of its streaks.
This moth also has an interesting history in the UK. It was first recorded in Britain in 1984 in West Sussex and since then it has spread to a number of southern UK coastal counties including Devon. It is still an uncommon species though it does breed in Britain and its caterpillars feed on Cypress trees /hedges. It is also thought to be a migrant moth. I have caught 3 individuals in the last few days.
