Pussy willow and friends in flower

There is something quite special about finding pussy willow in March. It’s another signal that spring is here but it is  almost a surprise to find it as it is not as showy or common as the other indicators such as primroses or daffodils

Willow 2These are the flowers of the goat willow Salix capraea – often called, at this time of year, the pussy willow

Willow 1 Here the ‘flower’ has fully opened exposing the pollen

Willow 3Along with pollen you find nectar which has attracted this hungry female red-tailed bumblebee

Willow 4And this hoverfly – the drone fly Eristalis tenax
