Fabulous starlings

Over the past few days I have been taking photographs of various birds – I thought I would share a little ‘portfolio’ of some starling pictures I took. In many ways people disregard starlings – they think of them perhaps as a nuisance and I guess for most people they only see them from a distance even though they are common. However when you see them close up they are in fact rather spectacular – indeed very beautiful. Here are a few photographs.

Starlings are even more amazing when they form huge flocks which are called murmurations. Here is a link to a blog I did a while ago about the starling roost at Okehampton Camp – see here.

I have heard of good starling murmurations this year at Topsham and in the Somerset Levels – are they still at Okehampton Camp? Does anyone know?

  1. You can sex starlings by the colour on the base of the bill on the photo above where you have a pair sitting on the wire the mail is on the left and the female is on the right 🙂
