Death in the sunshine

Yesterday I spotted this spider at Parke in the walled garden. It is one of the jumping spiders called Salticus scenicus. It had just caught this much larger insect – can’t quite see what it is – either a parasitic wasp, a mosquito  or a cranefly.

Salticus 2

Salticus 3 Salticus is sometimes known as the zebra spider

Salticus 4You can see the two large front facing eyes on the spider – in total Salticus has 8 eyes!

Tabanus and SalticusRather bizarrely just above the spider was a large horsefly – genus Tabanus – just hanging around!

TabanusHorseflies are blood suckers so wasn’t waiting to steal the prey.
