Starling roost on Dartmoor
On my way home from Lydford Gorge today I went up to Okehampton Camp to watch the starling roost come in.
It is absolutely spectacular – hundreds of thousands of birds – maybe more come in just before dusk and roost in the conifer trees at the west end of the army camp. To me this is one of the most spectacular wildlife events you can see in Britain.
From Okehampton follow the signs to the Army Camp and drive right up onto the moor. Stand around the southern boundary of the camp where it meets the moor about 30 minutes before sunset ….. For fuller directions – see here.
You may even be treated a lovely sunset.

Hi Adrian, Enjoyed the article on starlings and the pictures. We are planning to come to Dartmoor this weekend from Exeter. I am keen to see the starlings roost. Do you know the best place to go near the Camp to see them We will have a couple of elder ladies with us so access is an issue.
Many thanks….
Grid reference SX592930. Park at the second entrance to the camp – just before the cattle grid. Walk over the cattle grid – via a gate – turn right along the road to Antony Stile – 100 yards in total from the car. Get there 4.15 and be patient! All done by 5pm
